Rachel Roberts watched the sweating motel owner squirm for a few seconds.

“I—I did? Huh. Must’ve heard me wrong. Yeah, I know his name. Curt Ballard. Some ex-military type who can play Global Invasion like no one else—even Mark.” Joey Pavin stared at her notebook. “Looks like a case of mistranslation or somethin’.”

Rachel knew that what she had written in her notebook was accurate. She could push the issue but decided to let it go for now. It would be interesting later to discuss Joey’s changing story with Obadiah Ben-David.

Her partner must have deciphered the intention during her pause and said to Joey, “You go down to the motel room and knock. What happens?”

At this, the motel owner leaned back and smirked—it was story time with Grandpa Joey. “I knock on the door, and there’s nothin’. I knock again. Doesn’t do sheyittt. But I know that Brother Curt is in there.”

So, he knows that Curt’s nickname is Brother Curt.

“How do you know?” Ben-David asked.

“’Cause I can hear him swearin’. I give it another thirty seconds. Still no dice.” Joey stuck out his index finger and waved it back and forth. “No, no, no. You don’t play that game with Joey Pavin—not at his mo-tah-el. So, I play my trump card and pull out my master key. Within seconds I’ve got the door open, and Brother Curt looks at me wide-eyed and then squints and covers his eyes. The early evening light pouring through the open door is still enough to blind him since the entire room is dark. ‘Should’ve answered the door, Curtie,’ I say. He drops his controller and, with that free hand, starts waving at me to close the door.” Joey smirked. “I keep it open for a few extra seconds and then show him mercy. I step inside and close the door behind me. We exchange a few words. I let him get out a few expletives and then offer a joint as a peace offering. He accepts, and I put him at ease—tell him I don’t want to play the game but want to just chill and watch him kick ass in Global Invasion.”

“Does he let you?”

“Of course. I unplug the smoke detector, and he lights up. Okay, okay, I’ll save you the anticipation. I take a few hits when he offers them . . . no more than five or somethin’. But I know that Crystal has things well in hand up at the front desk, and I’ve got my goddamned ball and chain on me in case there are any issues,” he said, pulling a small, black plastic radio out of his other cargo pocket. “I sit on the bed, and he offers me a can of G Fuel. Stuff’s amazing. I’ll never forget the flavor: Sour Chug Rug. I slammed two of them, felt ten years younger. He slams a couple and then lets the joint hang from his mouth while he puts his headset back on and continues to play. What can I say? I’m mesmerized.
